Abstract: Cordierite honeycomb ceramic carriers with low coefficient of thermal expansion were prepared by extrusion molding process using flake talc, flake kaolin, etc. Several sets of formulations were designed according to the compositional sites of cordierite, and the formulations for the preparation of honeycomb ceramic carriers with low coefficient of thermal expansion were determined through the analysis of the properties of the carriers such as the microscopic morphology, pore size distribution, and coefficient of thermal expansion after sintering. It was known that the addition of flake talc, flake kaolin and ultrafine oxides could promote the oriented alignment of cordierite and effectively reduce the thermal expansion coefficient of the carrier, and the cordierite cellular ceramic carriers have negative thermal expansion characteristics at room temperature to 450 ℃, and the prepared carriers have a low thermal expansion coefficient of ≤0.3×10−6−1 (from the room temperature to 800 ℃). It is of great significance for the production and research and development of cordierite materials with low coefficient of thermal expansion.
Key words: cordierite; low coefficient of thermal expansion; honeycomb ceramics; negative thermal expansion
