Abstract: Medium frequency induction furnace is an important equipment in the process of smelting high quality steel and alloy material. Its alumina ceramic crucible is in high temperature and harsh conditions in the furnace, which not only served as a container, also was involved in metallurgical physical and chemical processes. The crucible has an important influence to the safe operation of the intermediate frequency induction furnace and quality of molten steel. The results show that: monocalcium aluminate (CA) coating formed high viscosity layer between the alumina ceramic and molten steel at high temperature, it can effectively prevent the penetration of molten steel at the beginning;after that, monocalcium aluminate (CA) coating chemically was combined with alumina ceramic by in situ reaction, meanwhile, the coating gradually transformed into calcium hexaluminate (CA6) isolation layer through absorbing aluminum oxide inclusions in the molten steel. It can not only reduce the penetration of molten steel, but also effectively purify molten steel and improve the quality of the steel.
