Abstract: In this paper, zirconia whiskers were prepared with the precursor of zirconia synthesized by solvothermal method, and then mixed with molten salt. The X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Raman spectra (Raman) were employed to investigate the influence of solvothermal temperatures on zirconia precursor phase and the preparation of zirconia whiskers. The results show that with the increase of the solvothermal temperature, the crystal development of zirconia in the precursor is getting better and better. When the solvothermal temperature is 120 °C, a large number of monoclinic zirconia whiskers elongated along the growth direction of [001] with the average aspect ratio of 15 can be obtained.

Key words: zirconia; whisker; solvothermal temperature; molten salt
