Abstract: There are multiple standards for the aesthetic evaluation of paintings in ancient China. Among many theories, one of the most recognized by the painting world is “Yige (spontaneity)”. As an aesthetic criterion for appraising Chinese painting, “Yige” has had a profound impact on the development of Chinese painting. Compared with other painters, Liang Kai is the most representative in the practice of “Yige”. This paper takes “Yige” as a starting point to analyze his painting theory from the aspects of nature, brush strokes and artistic conception, to further illustrate the significance of “Yige” in traditional painting.
