Abstract: In order to improve the adsorption of methylene blue (MB), urea was used to modify the Longyan Clay. XRD and FT-IR were used to observe the effect of the intercalation process on d-spacing and property of the interlayer space. The adsorption performance of MB onto the modified Longyan Clay was investigated under different conditions. The results showed the intercalation of urea enhanced the adsorption capacity, the maximum sorption capacity reached 28.49 mg/g, 42% higher than that of the unmodified. The adsorption data of MB

onto the modified Longyan Clay was in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order model and followed the Langmuir isothermal equation.
Key words: Longyan Clay; intercalating modification; adsorption
