Abstract: Potsherd stitching is a time-consuming and laborious work in archaeology. To improve the efficiency of potsherd stitching, a two-dimensional stitching algorithm, which is a part of earthenware with circular contour, using shape constraint, is presented. The line and arc feature sets are extracted by preprocessing the potsherd image, while the feature sets are processed through rigid transformation to match and stitch between the potsherds. The errors used to measure the stitching effect are evaluated through the definition of contour coordinate and circular contour shape consistencies. The algorithm is only associated with the potsherd shape, instead of the gray level of the potsherd image. It is demonstrated that the potsherd stitching algorithm has high efficiency with real-time characteristic.

Key words: potsherd stitching; shape constraint; two-dimensional stitching
