Abstract: Zn(CrxAl1-x)O4 (0≤ x ≤1) ceramic pigment was prepared by the aqueous solution combustion method using Zn(NO3)2•6H2O,Cr(NO3)3•9H2O, Al(NO3)3•9H2O and Co(NH2)2 as starting materials. The effects of Cr3+ doping content and heat treatment temperature on the phase composition, microstructure and coloring performance of the synthesized ultrafine powder were investigated by XRD, SEM and color analyzer. The results show that the red chromatic value (a*) arrives at the maximum of 19.91 under the following conditions: Cr3+ doping content x=0.2, heat treating at 1200 ℃ and holding for 30 min. Morphology of the synthesized pigment shows an underdeveloped octahedral structure or a derived aggregate form, and the particle size of the above as-synthesized ceramic pigment is mainly in 150-200 nm.

Key words: aqueous solution combustion; ultrafine pigment; spinel; performance
