The Application of 3-D Scanning Technology to Engraving on Irregularshaped Ultrathin Ceramics

Abstract: With its rapid development, the 3-D scanning technology has been used in many important fi elds; its application to CNC engraving on eggshell ceramics can solve its inconsistent shaping, hard positioning, easy breaking. The paper described the application of a 3-D raster scanner in online scanning of eggshell ceramics, the subsequent data processing and the generation of a CNC program for relief carving. The CNC engraving based on the 3-D scanning technology on eggshell ceramics makes possible the numerical machining on extremely fragile irregular-shaped ultrathin ceramics; it can successfully replace traditional hand engraving on eggshell ceramics, improve its product quality and production effi ciency, and contribute signifi cantly to the personalized decoration and mass production of eggshell ceramics.
