Effects of Alumina Doping on Microstructure of YSZ Ceramics

Abstract: Alumina with different mass fractions and particle sizes were added to yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics. The effects of different alumina grain sizes and doping amounts on the crystal phase composition and microstructure of YSZ ceramics were studied. The results indicated that the average crystallite size decreased with the increase of the alumina doping amount, but the YSZ ceramics exhibited a non-uniform microstructure and increased defects with the addition of coarse alumina particles. The XRD pattern revealed the apparent presence of α- alumina phase when 5% fine alumina particles were added.
