Abstract: Elemental composition of ancient pottery and porcelain, one of the main concerns of ancient ceramic research, provides information about variety, provenance and firing technology, etc. With the development of science and technology, more and more element analysis techniques have been introduced. However, each technique has its own characteristics and application range, and must be chosen properly according to the features of different ancient ceramic samples and their specific research targets. Through the comparative analysis of XRF, ICP -AES and wet chemical method, suitable test techniques for different types of ancient ceramic samples were obtained and their distinctive characteristics were summarized.

Keywords: ancient ceramics, XRF, ICP-AES, wet chemical method
