“Profitable Adaptation of What Is There and Usefulness in What Is Not”: Philosophical Thoughts behind Ceramics of Wei and Jin Dynasties

Abstract: Due to the chaos of wars happened in northern area in the Wei -Jin period, the center of porcelain production was transferred to the south. Yue Kiln, Ou kiln, Wuzhou kiln, Deqing kiln and Junshan kiln around Zhejiang flourished.The celadon ware rose to eminence in the south for its large variety and delicate artistic decorations. It not only provided reference for the white porcelain which appeared after the Northern Dynasty, but also laid a solid foundation for the situation of "south green and north white" in the early Tang Dynasty. This paper mainly analyzes the features of the porcelain especially the celadon from the period of the three Kingdoms, to Wei, Jin, the Southern and the Northern Dynasties in terms of glaze, shape and decoration, in order to discover the philosophy hidden behind in this era.
