Abstract: ZrO2-SiO2 composite sol obtained by sol-gel process was fast gelatinized into the starting powder, using carbon as the source of carbon black. After calcining the powder in the reduction atmosphere, the ZrSiO4 encapsulated carbon black pigment was prepared. The as-prepared pigment was then characterized by XRD, TEM, TG/DTA, etc. Results show: the Zr(OH)4 -Si(OH)4 composite sol can be converted into ZrSiO4 when calcined in reduction atmosphere at 1150℃; the encapsulated pigment has only 3% loss on ignition after being fired in oxidation atmosphere and well retains the color of black, which indicates ZrSiO4 has effected efficient encapsulation of the carbon black; and a number of carbon black grains are incorporated into dense ZrSiO4 particles due to the gelatinization of Zr(OH)4-Si(OH)composite sol.
