Abstract: In this paper, some analyzing techniques such as EDXRF, SEM and thermal dilatometer were used to study the chemical composition, microstructure and firing temperature of the proto-porcelain excavated from the nobles' tombs of the Yue state at Hongshan in Jiangsu Province and Deqing in Zhejiang Province of South China at the latest. Through a comparison with celadon samples produced in Longquan and blue glaze samples produced in Jingdezhen, the causes of,glaze crawling on proto -porcelain surface, one of the most typical glaze defects, were analyzed. The study will provide reference for resolving some important questions in the history of Chinese ceramics such as the origin of porcelain. It will also present the theoretic basis for the technological perception of proto-porcelain glazes and the evolvement of Chinese glazes.

Key words: proto-porcelain; glaze crawling; surface tension; forming reason
