Abstract: Jingdezhen is regarded the capital of porcelain in the world. Its porcelain art represents the highest attainment of Chinese ceramic in history. It's not only renowned in the world for its jade white, mirror shine, paper thin and tinkling sound., but also left an immense heritage of ceramic culture to later generations. Since Song Dynasty, Jingdezhen ceramics has been exposed to influences from folk paintings, embroidery, metal art, overseas decorations and traditional Chinese ink painting, and evolved into an art form of diversity. Among its ranges, porcelain wares with blue and white, famille verte and famille rose decorations have been most popular. The development of Jingdezhen ceramics has for quite a long time been well connected with the evolution of the Gan (Jiangxi) culture. Most concerns of Jingdezhen ceramic aesthetics like literati taste, religious influence, shape and decoration have their origins in the Gan culture. They emerged, developed, matured and transcended themselves in specific historical and cultural contexts, then converged to form a particular culture of Jingdezhen locality with its own implications and aesthetics. Investigation into the inherent relationship between the Gan culture and that of Jingdezhen to reveal their implications and value will help ceramic researchers and artists tap potentials in the future by referring to the past.

Key words: the Gan (Jiangxi) culture; ceramic culture; Jingdezhen
