The Nature and Characteristics of Mathematics

HUANG Qiugu

Abstract: Mathematics is a very old subject. Its earliest appearance can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. From the most general point of view, the history of mathematics can be divided into four basic, qualitatively different eras. Of course, it is impossible to accurately divide these eras, because the essential characteristics of each successive era are more or less gradually formed, but the difference between these eras and the transition between them can be very clearly expressed, that is, the collapse period. Starting from the most ancient era, it ended in the fifth century BC, perhaps earlier; the period of elementary mathematics, that is, constant mathematics, lasted for nearly two thousand years.
