Abstract:ZrO2 reinforced and toughened mullite composites were prepared using ZrO2 and electric cast mullite as the main raw materials. The effects of ZrO2 addition on the flexural strength (σ), fracture toughness (KIC) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of composites were investigated. It was found that the addition of ZrO2 is able to enhance the sinterability. The maximum σ (268.23MP ) and KIC (4.05MPa·m1/2) for the sample with 20wt% ZrO2 at 1550 ℃ are obtained, respectively. The primary causes are the needle-like mullite crystal staggered distribution and submicron ZrO2 pinning effect. The thermal expansion behavior was also influenced by the ZrO2 addition, with the coefficient of linear thermal expansion increasing with the increase in ZrO2addition.
