Abstract: High permeability ceramic microfiltration membranes without intermediate buffer layer were prepared by using a blocking method. Al2O3 support with large pores was coated with a PVB film, on top of which Al2O3 precursor was coated. After calcination, the PVB film was decomposed, thus leaving Al2O3 membranes without intermediate layers. The membranes had an average pore size of 0.26 μm and pure water permeance of (1468±81) L.m-2.h-1.bar-1. The high water permeability is attributed to the absence of intermediate layers and reduced blocking effect particles.

Key words: Al2O3; ceramic membranes; pore size; permeability; microfiltration
