Abstract: Mesoporous carbon materials were prepared by the co-carbonization of EDTA-Na2Mg·4H2O and coal tar pitch, then by acid washing and drying after heat treatment. The effects of EDTA-Na2Mg·4H2O on the carbonization and surface morphology of coal tar pitch were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The mesoporous carbon materials were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The results show that the thermogravimetric behavior of CTP changes from one-step weightlessness to sectional weightlessness due to the physical and chemical changes of EDTA-Na2Mg·4H2O. After acid washing of the carbon material heat treated at 800 °C, the obtained mesoporous carbon material consists of microporous and mesoporous structures. Its specific surface area is 176.40 m2/g and its average pore width is 3.03 nm.
