Abract: Reaction bonded silicon carbide ceramic was prepared by using SiC powder, carbon black, colloid graphite and silicon line cutting waste as raw materials. Chemical composition, phase composition, morphology and particle size distribution of silicon line cutting waste were analyzed. The effects of the kind of carbon source and amount of Si on the properties of reaction bonded silicon carbide ceramic were also studied. The main experiment results are as follows: the principal crystalline phases of the line cutting waste were Si and 6H-SiC, and the content of Si, SiC, Fe, Cu and other material were 60.00%, 25.00%, 3.51%, 0.08% and 11.47%, respectively. The bulk density, water absorption and apparent porosity of the reaction bonded silicon carbide sintered at 1600 °C in vacuum were 2.67 g/cm3, 2.30% and 6.10% respectively, when the content of Si was 30%. The bulk density, water absorption and apparent porosity of the sample were 2.39 g/cm3, 8.88% and 21.23% when colloid graphite was used as carbon source instead of carbon black.
