Abstract: Ruins mainly refer to architectural remains. As a visual image, they are widely present in paintings, photographs and prints. The “ruins” in modern ceramic arts is a material presence, due to the “physical” characteristics of the ceramic arts. Starting with the expression of "ruins" in the context of art, this paper is aimed to expound in detail the expressions of ruins in modern ceramic arts, which can be either expressive or realistic. With the progress of urbanization and interdisciplinary development, both the connotation and extension of ruins are also being varied. Therefore, ruins can be landscapes consisting of ready-made products or comprehensive installations integrating behaviors and multimedia. It is worth nothing that the aesthetics of ruins is highly congruent with the defective textures and incomplete beauty of ceramic arts.
