Abstract: In the paper, the repres entation of "the three cold - weather friends "(pine, bamboo and yellow plum, the three durable plants in winter) in traditional Chinese painting and underglaze blue decoration is observed and compared. Conclusions are: underglaze blue decoration and traditional Chines e are not much the s ame art form as far as their functions and us es are concerned; underglaze blue decoration shall adapt the repres entation to its own needs, and shall not adopt blindly the art conception of traditional Chinese painting.
