Effects of Silica Sol on the Properties of Corundum - Mullite Duplex Ceramics

Abstract: Silica  sol (SiO2) is added into corundum- mullite materials by sol- gel technology,and the effect mechanism of silica sol on the properties of corundum - mullite ceramics was investigated.  The  results show that SiO2 sol forms sub- μm  film on corundum- mulliteparticles,improve homogeneous  dis tribution of SiO2 in the materials and controls the microstructure of the materials.SiO2 sol can not only improve The thermal shock resistance of mullite - corundum duplex ceramic, but also increase high modulus of rupture and creep property.The formation of mullite by the reaction of silica sol and micro - cracks are the main reasons for improving thermal shock resistance of corundum- mullite duplex ceramics.
