Abstrct: Zirconia sol (ZrO2) was added into corundum- mullite materials by sol- gel technology, and the effect mechanism of silica sol on the properties of corundum- mullite ceramics was inves tigated. It is found that the addition of ZrO2 led by sol- gel can form sub- μm film on corundum- mullite particles , improve homogeneous dis tribution of ZrO2 in the materials and control the micros tructure of the materials . ZrO2 can increase thermal shock res is tance, high modulus of rupture and creep property of mullite - corundum duplex ceramic. The s tres s - induced - phase - trans formation of ZrO2 and micro - cracks are the main reasons for improving thermal shock res is tance of corundum- mullite duplex ceramic.
