Abstract:This paper investigates the historical origin of antiques as motifs on 17th century Jingdezhen porcelain and seeks to reveal the reasons behind their popularity. It's indicated that the decorative patterns have used as their models the images from the hanging scroll "bogutu" (a picture of antiques) of mid and late Ming Dynasty and that the participation of the literati in the design and production of commercial ceramics has rendered these patterns a strong taste of theirs. Catering to the needs of the people then for cultural refinement, the images of antiques became very popular motifs on ceramics in the 17th century.

Key words:17th century Jingdezhen porcelain; patterns of antiques; decoration; bogutu (picture of antiques)
