An Analysis on Chemical Compositions of pottery bodies of China, Japan and Europe

Abstract: A comparative study on the chemical compositions of pottery bodies has been done in order to have a clear idea about basic infor­mat ion on each speciality of Chinese,Japanese and European pottries. Sources of the materials used in the scudy are: (1) "An Investigation on the Technical Aspect of Chinese Ancient Ceramics" by Zhou Ren and Li Jiazhi (1960), (2) "Nippon Togyo" by O. Korschert, which is supposed to be written in 1880 s, (3) "La Porcelain" by G. Vogt (1893) and (4) "the Composition of Some Foreign Hard Porcelain Bodies" by H.A Seger (1880).The hard porcelain bodies are thought to be reasonably divided into 5 groups according to their chemical compositions. At first four groups: aluminous bodies, moderate bodies A-European type, moderate bodies B-oriental type and siliceous bodies are classi fied by Al2O3SiO2 ratio, and then alkaline bodies are to be especially classified in the fifth group.Hard fire potteries like the Awata in Japan and the various potteries of so called the north kiln in China are found to have a similar body composition rich in alumina.
