Boron Glaze of Beijing Liuli Ware of Liao Dynasty

Abstract: In  this article four sherds of Liao and Jin Dynasties have been investigated by measuring physical  properties,  analysing  chemical  compositions  of  bodies  and  glazes,  observing  microstructures and determining the high temperature behaviour of the glaze. From a series of observation and analysis, it is found that:

1. The colouring  agent  of green glaze is Cu2+ the  fusion  temperature  of glazes is about 663-910℃. Inthe glaze samples, two samples are traditional lead glazes, and other two samples are the boron, alkali and calcium  glazes, whose compositions belong to  B2O3-R2O(RO)-SiO2  system. The boron glaze in Beijing Liuli ware of Liao Dynasty is the first discovery in the ancient ceramics studies.

2. The firing temperature of bodies is about  1000— 1110℃, the compositions of bodies are similar  to  the  high  alumina  clays  in  North  China  and  local  white  porcelain  bodies  or  Liao  and  Jin Dynasties.
