Abstract: It is revealed that more than one kind of porcelain were made in Southern Song Altar Guan kiln site from the excavation of thcre discovered in 1920s. The connoisseurs arc interesting in the best quality fine porcelain only, but in this paper, the crude porcelain and black glaze ware unearthcd from Altar Guan kiln site were studied by the authcrs in detail. The chemical compositions and the microstructurcs of body and glaze had been investigated and the structural variations during firing had been determined·. The results obtained have been compared with the auther's data of Altar Guan fine ware and discussed briefly.
